Postcard

I'd send you a postcard
but what would I write?

That I miss you
you know.

That I want you
won't help.

That I think of you
is redundant.

As for the truth,
it will never fit.

So I send no postcard
but if I did

I'd sign it
"Love."

Remember

If you look at me
and see a killer's eyes looking back,
remember - you did that.

I have the same dark seed in me
that took such fruitful root in you,

only I stomped the green young shoots
while they still were tender.

Or maybe that was you. Who can remember.

March 2010

Scene from a wedding

I catch the bouquet. It lands like
a crown of thorns. A dozen roses
well up in my palms, blowing full & furling
back unto themselves, pulsing
little hearts. I could crush them
if I made a fist, but I do not
make a fist. Not yet.

The bride screams,
laughing, merry
in her merry-widow under the dress
she didn't choose.

"You're next!" she cries, an abnormally happy
waiting-room nurse, pristine
as though she'd never seen a bleed.

I smile a winner's smile,
wave aloft my second-hand prize,
making a fist,
petals raining down like little lies.

Thor on a Wednesday

I met Thor
on a Wednesday. Ironic,
but there he was,
browsing paperbacks
outside a used-book shop.

I knew him right away
despite the city-slick black leather uniformly
worn by gods in disguise.

Who else would have such eyes,
such hair, such enormous hands, icy gilt
scattering like powder in a sweeping wake.

He thumbed thuddily through the books
and I watched him from the corner of my eyes -
such eyes, such hair, such icy gilt.

He saw me looking, glinted,
asked me for a light. I said, "Here,
why'n't you just use this spark?"

March 2010. And yes, I've read Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" :)

Fades to White (Snow Song) (lyric)

The snow is falling down on the street
Lays a heavy blanket on the ground
Whispers winter soft beneath my feet
Covers all my tracks when I'm gone

And everything around fades to white
And everything behind fades away
I breathe a silent cloud into the cold and silent night
And watch it floating up into the air

The houses on my block are all aglow
With rows and rows of colored Christmas lights
And, rustling the wreath upon the door
Another year slips out without saying goodbye

And everything around fades to white
And everything behind fades away
I breathe a silent cloud into the cold and silent night
And watch it floating up into the air

Snow still coming down, thick and white
Turns the earth so still, so pure and blank
In the morning, will it turn to ice
Or will the children come to make angels and men?

And everything around fades to white
And everything behind fades away
I breathe a silent cloud into the cold and silent night
And watch it float away somewhere

Song You'll Never Hear (lyric)

This is the song you'll never hear
The words I'll never say
They fall and float away and disappear
Like snowflakes in the sky

But oh, my love
How I wish
They'd fly and find their way to you
And touch you like a kiss

These are the thoughts I'll never speak
The secrets I won't tell
I know this is the way it has to be
I'll keep you to myself

But oh, my love
I believe
That when we close our eyes at night
We meet again in dreams

This is the song you'll never hear
The tears I'll never cry
For you, who are so far away
So far from me tonight.
